Conference New Delhi December 6-8, 2001 NARESH KHANNA The keynote presentation on the packaging & converting day was delivered by Mr Ravindra Singhvi, Chairman, International Print-O-Pac Ltd., and talked about the growth prospects in packaging with emphasis on agricultural and food products. He opined that an enormous explosion in processing and packaging is just waiting to happen. One of the missions of the day was that we were trying to look at what lies behind this notion. But why isn't this really happening? Some of the leading packaging suppliers and companies dwelt on some of the issues - for example, the issue of cold chain, the necessity for it, or how soon it will happen. There was a discussion on materials, and the presentations on resins, inks and materials were interesting. The offset printers expressed keen interest in coatings and inks, because it plays a key role in what offset packaging can do. Ramesh Kejriwal made a presentation on inline quality control of carton making in the afternoon-essentially on online measurement and self-correcting systems and rejection. His presentation in fact, went a step further from what Purnendu Sen said about industrialisation of print, ISO standards and measurement. Mr Kejriwal's presentation implied that the packaging industry now is far more serious about quality control. Since we don't have gravure publications in India, in offset, the packaging industry is ahead of the newspaper industry in terms of quality control concepts and implementation. Mr Lakshmi Narayanan's presentation on labels and security, as well as the discussion on flexo versus gravure, highlighted the serious interest among packaging professionals about branding, security and anti-counterfeiting. One thought that flexo was the technology that was faster, cheaper and better, but gravure turned out to be the technology that found favour from most members of the panel. |Back
